On 09.09.09 at exactly 9 minutes and 9 seconds past 9 pm history was made as the landmark Metro Service was officially launched by His Highness Shaikh Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, marking the dawn of a new era for Dubai.

McDonald's vs McCurry

Fast food giant McDonald's on September 8 lost an eight-year trademark battle against a Malaysian curry restaurant after the country's highest court allowed the latter to use the prefix 'Mc'. Malaysia's Federal Court dismissed an application by McDonald's Corporation to appeal against an earlier Appeal Court's judgement which allowed McCurry to use the prefix. McCurry, which is short for ' Malaysian Chicken Curry ' serves Malaysian staples food.

Ahlan ya Ramadan

God willing, August 22, starts Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar, may be 29 or 30 days long. An Islamic month begins with the sighting of the new crescent in the western horizon immediately after sunset. If the new moon is not sighted on the 29th day, Muslims complete 30 days of Sha'ban, the month before Ramadan and begins fasting the following day.
Fasting begins with dawn and ends with sunset. Muslims rise before dawn, eat Sahur (pre-dawn meal) and drink liquids for the preparation of fasting. The fast is broken immediately after sunset, usually by eating dates and drinking water or juice. During the day, no eating, drinking or sexual activity is allowed. In addition, a Muslim must adhere to the moral code of Islam strictly, as failure to do so violates the requirements of fasting.

Swarms of snakes are attacking people and cattle in Southern Iraq as the two rivers dry up and the reptiles lose their natural habitat among the reed beds.

Singer Michael Jackson was rushed from his home to UCLA Medical Center around midday US time on Thursday after he stopped breathing and suffered a cardiac arrest, but his death was announced shortly afterwards. Tributes have poured in for the 50-year-old, who will go down in history as the king of the pop. Michael Joseph Jackson was born August 29, 1958, in Gary, Indiana.

Crops on towers

In Dubai two inventors from Italy invented a unique vertical seawater farm design to grow crops on pods suspended high above the ground. The project is based on the principles of the ancient Arabian wind towers to capture humidity and irrigate crops grown high above the ground.

An Egyptian construction magnate was sentenced to death for Suzzanne Tamin's murder.The beautiful Lebanese pop singer was brutally murdered in her Dubai apartment in July, 2008. She was 30. The security man who was paid $2 millions by the magnate to stab Tamin to death was also sentenced to death.

In the High Court in Riyadh a 34-year-old Saudi woman who is accused of disfiguring and burning a Syrian woman by showering her with acid. The victim wants retribution instead.

Arrest Warrant

The arrest warrant makes Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir the first serving head of state indicted by the ICC for war crimes. Some described the ICC verdict as a way to reinforce the Darfur crisis and encourage violence throughout Sudan. The ICC should take into consideration how the arrest warrant could distabilize Sudan. They are ignoring all the ramifications that could take place after the decision. It is obvious they politicizing the conflict in many respects which is why there is a general sense of anger in the Arab world towards the court.

Bushfires

Australian bush-fires have killed at least 181 people so far and burnt hundred of homes in the worst fire disaster in history, as a heatwave and strong winds sent sheets of flame racing through towns and farmland near Melbourne.
The fires, which started from February 7 and have affected an area of more than 3,000 sq.km., also left hundreds of people homeless and many properties totally destroyed.
Scientists causioned against attributing the bush-fires themselves to global warming, they said changing conditions from rising temperatures are having an impact. Due to changes in the climate, the high risk of fires has increased. The dry conditions and the devastating fires bolster their campaign to push the world's governments to move faster on reducing emissions of greenhouse gases.

Gaza Massacre

Two weeks under fire and still no end in sight. Troops pushed deeper into Gaza in a day of fierce fighting on Sunday as Israel ignored continuing global protests. Civilians again fell victim to Israel's brutal offensive that has left more than 900 people dead in the 16-day-old war, including 275 children. At least a quarter to one-third of deaths to date have been children.Unlike other conflicts where there's a chance to flee the war zone. There's nowhere else for the population to go. An example is the recent Israel attack near a United Nations school in Gaza, killing more than 40 among the hundreds who had sought refuge at the school from the fighting.

Hajj

Three millions of faithful, wearing white robes, converged on the plains of Arafat on Sunday, marking the climax of this year's Hajj.
Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam and is an obligation on every able-bodied Muslim at least once in their lifetime. The pilgrimage is a spiritual journey that Muslims believe will absolve them of their sins and cleanse their souls, meaning they return home with a clean state.
Many pilgrims have described hajj as a life-changing experience.

IDB Award

Professor Asma Ismail, deputy vice chancellor of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and director of the Institute for Research in Molecular Medicine (INFORMM) at the university, received the IDB award from Finance Minister, Ibrahim Al Assaf.
