Myanmar democracy heroine Aung San Suu Kyi tasted freedom Saturday for the first time in 7 1/2 years, as jubilant supporters stormed the lakeside compound that was her home and prisons minutes after the country's military rulers authorized her release.The 65-year-old, whose latest period of detention started in May 2003, has come to symbolize the struggle for democracy in the Southeast Asian nation ruled by the military since 1962. Suu Kyi has been jailed or under house arrest for more than 15 of the last 21 years.

Inseparable

A pair of conjoined Palestinian twins, Rital and Ritaj, who came to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia from the Gaza Strip to undergo separation surgery died in Riyadh on Saturday.
The two girls were born on March 27, the first ever in the impoverished Gaza Strip where doctors lacked the resources to treat them. They requested help from Saudi Arabia, which has world-renowned facilities for separating conjoined twins.
The twins ran into obstacles in getting there. They had to obtain passports from the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank, permission from Israel and approval from the Egyptian government to open the border out of Gaza.

Devastating Earthquake

One of the largest earthquakes ever recorded tore apart houses, bridges and highways in central Chile on Saturday and sent a tsunami racing halfway around the world. Chileans near the epicenter were tossed about as if shaken by a giant, and at least 214 people were dead. A tsunami set off by the magnitude-8.8 quake threatened every nation around the Pacific Ocean roughly a quarter of the globe.

Longest Solar Eclipse














The longest ring-like solar eclipse of the millennium started on Friday, January 15, 2010. The eclipse was annular, meaning the moon will block most of the sun's middle but not it's edges, causing it to look like a ring. This blockage lasted for about 11 minutes 8 seconds. The last annular eclipse occured roughly 1 year ago, January 26, 2009. The next one will happen May 20, 2012.

Tremor Hit Haiti

























 The Haitian capital has largely been destroyed in the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in more than 200 years. The 7.0-magnitude quake struck at 4.53 pm. Tuesday, 12 January 2010, leaving large numbers of people unaccounted for.
